Tennant's Hair in The Day of the Doctor
Reflecting Mood?
This one is one that I came up with on my own sitting around thinking about the mystery of his hair.
First let's go through the expressions displayed here.
Can anyone see the story? No? Okay here it goes!
In the 1st picture from the Waters of Mars we see three immediate expressions in his face. 1. Terror. 2. Guilt and 3. Sadness. All at the same time as the weight of what he has done comes crashing down on his head
This is wrong, Doctor! I don't care who you are! The Time Lord victorious is wrong! Then you see him basically have an emotional breakdown as he sees Ood Sigma and thinks that this could be the end. All that we know of The 10th Doctor is gone in this part. He is, in a few words: deflated, lost, confused, and sad. Then we see him rise up more towards the end of this episode when, after hearing the cloister bell, he says 'no' and pulls a lever.
Next time we see him chronologically is with Queen Elizabeth the 1st, having a picnic with the nearby Zygon horse. He looks a bit better but his eyes are still sad, as seen through the whole episode. His hair is flat and he seems to have lost his spirit. Trying to joke around with the other Doctors and yet easily falling down into despair. He ends this episode with the most story-arced last words ever heard on Doctor Who.
We need a new destination, because... I don't wanna go.Now fast forward!
The Doctor arrives on the Ood planet and begins to talk and joke with Ood Sigma. He is obviously much happier, maybe a side effect from subconsciously knowing his people are safe, and talks about Elizabeth the 1st. Ood Sigma, however, fails to see anything funny and leads The Doctor to a cave, where The Doctor finds out that The Master has returned, or is attempting too. Given a reason to fight again he rushes to the T.A.R.D.I.S. with renewed energy. The rest of the episode, until the very end, you would never believe that this was the same person who was so broken in the last two episodes before.
He remains this way until the end, when he has to take up the gun. Then the despair comes back and his hair gets a mild bit wilder. Hey, after falling through a skylight and the heightened energy he has why expect him to keep calm? His hair remains ruffled until the regeneration.
What does this and his personality have to do with his hair being flat? Well to sum it up:
Waters of Mars: Good ol' Doctor 'til the end
Day of the Doctor: Despairing at the prospect of his imminent death
The End of Time: He has The Master back, a new cause to be around for
So basically, his hair is describing his personality at the time of the episode, or the makeup team got lazy, but leaving out effects and all that, a small mistake could easily become canon with the character. (We have seen this before with Matt Smith -- no one wanted him to wear the bow tie, yet he insisted, and now well, let the internet memes say the rest)
So what do you think? Think his hair could be telling us how he really feels in the 50th, or just a lazy mistake. Either way, it's a fun theory to think about.
2nd Theory (Dimissed)
Early on in Timestream
So I saw this theory somewhere and thought it was interesting to look into, so here is me looking into it.
So, what if instead of between The Waters of Mars and The End of Time this happened earlier on in The Doctor's time stream, for example, after losing Rose.
With Rose
After Rose (Martha, Donna, River, and The End of Time)
You can see that after losing Rose his hair becomes very ruffled up, I have also noticed that towards the end of Season 2 his hair gets a little wilder, explanation?
[Rose spots a cat while she and the Doctor are in the street]Experimenting with back combing, which he apparently decided suited him as we've see him wear it in many episodes since, he wears a sightly less crazy version of this in Doomsday and The Runaway Bride, probably between the styles.
Rose: [Kneeling down to stroke it] Aren't you a beautiful boy!
The Doctor: [Has his back to Rose and thinks that Rose is talking to him] Thanks. I've been experimenting with back-combing… *sees Rose stroking the cat* Oh.
HOWEVER
In the beginning of the 50th, or at least Tennant's beginning in it, we see him with Elizabeth the 1st. In The Shakespeare Code we see the beginning of this story arc, where he has no idea who she is. Thus if this was earlier on in his time stream it would have had to be between The Voyage of the Damned and Partners in Crime, however since his hair is the same in both episodes and has no intention of laying flat we may dismiss this theory. Thus most likely placing the 50th between The Waters of Mars and The End Of Time.
3rd Theory (Crack theory!)
He's Mocking Smith (even more…)
If you look closely at the way 10's hair is styled it looks rather familiar to one of our other Doctors.
Yes it is obviously much flatter, but it almost looks like an imitation, and we already know that Tennant has joined the 'Matt's Chin Tease-wagon' So could he have got far enough as to openly mock Matt's hair as well?
Just a note that this 3rd theory is complete theory crack that I came up with randomly after too much Google searching. The 1st theory is the one I am trying to highlight here.
